The Transition from Shoes
When shoes are removed the transition process to a working barefoot horse begins. Most of the work is done by the horse, but structural atrophy and weakness in the hoof can effect comfort and soundness on living and working terrain. A mindful trim that allows the foot to gradually return to function and the use of protective hoof boots is used by Equine Wellness Services.
This is a process that can take 6 months to a year, but that does not mean time off. We are mindful that some maintenance changes may be needed (better footing in the living environment, the use of protective hoof boots) and we do ask owners to work some changes, but the transition cannot happen without movement, so we always want soundness and no time off.
