WHAT IS A FECAL EGG COUNT?
A FEC is  sampling manure using a quantitative test. I use the modified McMaster method. With this test you will know how many and what kind of parasite your horse may be harboring and then choose the appropriate dewormer if necessary. Most horses only need deworming once or twice a year if their counts are low. New protocol encourages owners to leave a very small worm population as this stimulates the horses immune system to keep parasites in check, and by not deworming more than necessary, parasites are less likely to develop resistance to current drugs. Testing first insures that deworming is really necessary, saving you money on dewormers and keeping your horse healthier by not taxing their immune system with an unnecessary drug. Our company performs this service to assist veterinarians by helping spread the word of testing first and being an economical option.
